Custom Woodcarving Projects

English Rococo Chimney, Private Residence
English Rococo Chimney, Private Residence

When this project was first presented it was several large distorted photocopies blown up from a small picture. These images were pinned up against the wall (you see in this picture) where it was to eventually to be installed. Adam Thorpe, our Chief Wood Carver at the time, was the only carver who was up to the task of making this a reality.

The Project:

Adam produced full sized drawings for the client and the designers to review and comment on. Then Adam (the youngest elected British Master Carver) went to London to study how these chimney pieces were constructed (pretty crudely) and in particular how the different parts of the mirror would be attached (pretty cleverly). Study also had to be made of the strength and depth of the carving as this can vary depending on time - and cost. He spent time in the Victoria and Albert Museum drawing the relevant elements that he found there and knew that we would not get many chances to do a project like this. He really did an incredible job - no holds barred - the full monty!

The result, after about 3600 hours of work including gilding, is one of the most incredible pieces of English rococo ever achieved.

Our dear friend, Adam Thorpe, is the best draftsman and carver of classical carving in the world - we highly recommend his work and refer you to his web site at www.ornatech.com

Agrell Architectural Carving has created a wood carving workshop of international stature here in the United States, and work like this is a true testimony to their craftsmanship.
