Restoration of Bishops Sherlocks Room Fullham Palace
Restoration of Bishops Sherlocks Room

Fulham Palace is a remarkable place. The estate was owned by the Bishops of London for over 1300 years and the Palace was their country home from at least the 11th century. Vacated by the Bishops in 1975, the Palace is now managed jointly by Hammersmith and Fulham Council and the Fulham Palace Trust.

Restoration

Bishops Sherlock's coat of arms sits between the carved the broken pediment of the main door. The Council and the Fulham Palace Trust are working together to restore Fulham Palace in two phases over five years. The first Phase of works was achieved with major financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Completed in October 2006, it focussed on four key areas:

  • The restoration of Bishop Sherlock's Room within the Palace
  • The refurbishment of the Bishop's former bedrooms within the Palace’s East Quadrangle for use as offices
  • The refurbishment of the East Quadrangle's public rooms for use as a museum, café and gallery and
  • The renewal of services throughout the Palace's East Quadrangle and across the grounds
Agrell Architectural Carving, Ltd. produced all the wood carving for Bishops Sherlock's room. Carved in pine and based on original fragments, this 3,000 hour project included egg and dart, acanthus mouldings and classical corinthian capitals.

Bishops Sherlock's coat of arms sits between the carved broken pediment of the main door. The fire surround incorporates brackets, ornate moulding and a beautifully carved central frieze of acanthus and flowers.

The quality of the carving your company has provided for Bishop Sherlock's Room is, by common consent, simply outstanding. Congratulations to you and your team of carvers on a superb job. The craftsmanship on display is extraordinary and the appearance of the room is remarkable as a result.
