Renaissance Style Capital
Renaissance Style Capital

This renaissance style capital was copied from one of the many types of hand carved capitals that Agrell Architectural Carving produced for the governor's mansion in Utah.

The upper plate is called an abacus and the flower in the center of each face is a "fleuron". On either side of a fillet the abacus mouldings show a overlo at the top and a cavetto at the bottom. The main section of this carved capital is found beneath the abacus, and there are volutes at each corner (sometimes referred to as a helix or spiral). Between these are carved honeysuckle leaves and below these acanthus leaves climb the capital to rest under the volutes.

It should be stressed that, properly carved, classical wood carved capitals require skill and time to complete. A large wood carved Corinthian capital or composite capital often costs more than clients are prepared to bear. Due to the expense we have developed some beautiful "corinthian like" capitals that are not as complex but look wonderful. They have been very well received. When you contact Agrell Architectural Carving ask to see these carved capitals.
